While on the faculty of the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing, Gail W. Johnson and her students saw firsthand how families were in crisis because their children had acute or chronic health conditions. A major component of the crises stemmed from the lack of services for these children when the parents had to return to work.
In response, Gail created the Get Well Place® at Rainbow Station to meet the needs of working parents with mildly ill children. In the Get Well Place, a full-time pediatric nurse cares for children so their parents can be productive at work. As an additional benefit, our nurses are always there should any child or member of our staff need care during the day. How many early childhood programs can boast onsite, full-time nursing care!
In 1996, Gail conceived the Village, a unique school-age recreation program. She realized that in years past, children played freely in their neighborhoods and safely participated in various recreational options after school and on summer break.
The Village at Rainbow Station is reminiscent of these days. Children can go to the village green for town meetings, the café for snacks, the library to study, or the theatre for dramatic play. It’s a complete village within a building!
The Village creates an atmosphere that is free, yet safe, complete with age-appropriate activities in a fun, stimulating environment. Professional teachers work with the students in the Village, and help with homework during the school year. The Village was an exciting breakthrough that provides the all-encompassing after school and summer recreation program that parents were seeking!
We developed our own proprietary curriculum, PLAYWORKS, for pre school children because we know that good habits of learning begin early. This age-appropriate approach helps children discover and develop a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
But don’t take our word for it, Rainbow Station has been recognized by many National education associations and independent groups for it’s over all excellence.
Rainbow Station is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), which sets professional standards for early childhood education programs throughout the country.

As well as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS) and The National After School Association.
And in 2010, Rainbow Station has incorporated "The Leader in Me" initiative into its preschool core curriculum.
"The Leader in Me" is based on the best-selling book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen R. Covey, and is designed to help students be successful in the 21st Century. We are now using "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" to teach these principles, as well as recognize and positively reinforce these principles in our students.
