The Birth of Rainbow Station®

The Idea: Emergency backup care
While on the faculty of the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing, Gail W. Johnson and her students saw firsthand how families were in crisis because their children had acute or chronic health conditions. A major component of the crises stemmed from the lack of services for these children when the parents had to return to work.

In response, Gail created the Get Well Place® at Rainbow Station to meet the needs of working parents with mildly ill children. In the Get Well Place, a full-time pediatric nurse cares for children so their parents can be productive at work. As an additional benefit, our nurses are always there should any child or member of our staff need care during the day. How many early childhood programs can boast onsite, full-time nursing care!

Yet Another Idea . . .
In 1996, Gail conceived the Village, a unique school-age recreation program. She realized that in years past, children played freely in their neighborhoods and safely participated in various recreational options after school and on summer break.

The Village at Rainbow Station is reminiscent of these days. Children can go to the village green for town meetings, the café for snacks, the library to study, or the theatre for dramatic play. It’s a complete village within a building!

The Village creates an atmosphere that is free, yet safe, complete with age-appropriate activities in a fun, stimulating environment. Professional teachers work with the students in the Village, and help with homework during the school year. The Village was an exciting breakthrough that provides the all-encompassing after school and summer recreation program that parents were seeking!
